Styrax benzoin is a tree native to the topical climates of southeast Asia, China, and Indonesia. Also known as gum Benjamin, this resin is obtained from the rainforest tree and has an aroma similar to vanilla when dried.

The resin ranges in color from pale yellow to red brown and is harvested by making triangular incisions into the tree's bark to establish a flow, which then hardens into lumps when exposed to air and sunlight.

The powder is used as a fixative in incense and potpourri, as flavoring in baked goods and other foods and as a preservative in natural cosmetics.
